Linux Upgrade Saves Aging Tablet from Obsolete Windows

The author's old Samsung Galaxy TabPro S LTE was due for an upgrade from Windows 10, but Microsoft refused to provide support due to its age. The device had a remarkable display, Intel processor, and detachable keyboard.

Instead of updating the device with years' worth of Windows updates, the author decided to install Linux, specifically Fedora Workstation 44. To their surprise, the live environment recognized most of the hardware features instantly.

The author was cautious about installing Linux on a tablet, as it's notoriously difficult to get working adequately. However, Fedora installed quickly and easily without requiring any special procedures or disabling Secure Boot.

After installation, the author upgraded 1,544 packages using Fedora's DNF package manager. The kernel remained at version 6.19.10-300.fc44.x86_64, which was already current on the live image.
