Li's Water Hazard Penalty Costs Him Shot at Amgen Irish Open Title

Chinese golfer Haotong Li was assessed a one-stroke penalty in the third round of the Amgen Irish Open at Trump International Doonbeg, a move that ultimately derailed his chances of winning.

The incident occurred on the par-5 10th hole when Li hit his second shot into a stream that runs through the fairway. He was forced to retrieve the ball from the water, but in doing so, he breached Rule 9.4b by causing the ball at rest to move.

Li consulted with a rules official and estimated where the ball had originally been before playing it from the stream. However, the DP World Tour later confirmed that Li was penalized one stroke for his actions.

The penalty proved costly for Li, who went on to make three more bogeys without registering any birdies in the remainder of the round. He finished with a two-over-par 72 and ended the day tied for sixth, 10 shots behind leader Shane Lowry.
