Lorcana Unveils Format Coconut, a Group-Play Twist on Magic
Disney's Lorcana has announced its answer to Magic: The Gathering's popular Commander format, dubbed 'Format Coconut'. This new format is designed for more than two players and will be playtested at Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis from July 30 through August 2. According to co-creator Ryan Miller, the design team wanted to create a format that captures the spirit of group gameplay.
In Format Coconut, each player selects one 'Coconut' card from a pool of 18 beta cards, which are all prominent Disney characters. These cards come with special abilities that define the deck's strategy. For example, Moana - Curious Explorer has an ability to let players ink additional cards during their turn if they have other Moana characters in play.
The rules for Format Coconut allow each deck to have three ink types, but one of them must match the player's selected 'Coconut' card. This encourages players to build decks around a specific theme and character.
