Irish golfer Shane Lowry was at the center of controversy during the Amgen Irish Open, after making a comment about volunteers who got in the way of his tee shot on the 18th hole.

The incident occurred on Saturday's third round, when Lowry pulled his drive left towards a crosswalk area. As he spoke to TV microphones, he appeared to say: 'They deserved to get hit.'

Lowry defended his comment after winning the tournament on Sunday, explaining that marshals often get in the way and make it difficult for golfers to focus.

He said: 'Marshals obviously have a very tough job and they are volunteers. But they get a little bit in the way at times, I feel like.'

Lowry went on to win the tournament with an 11-shot victory, his first major win since 2019.
