Lufthansa Rejects Early Boeing 777-9s Over Age and Engine Concerns
Lufthansa has joined Emirates in rejecting some early-built Boeing 777-9s due to concerns over their age and engine durability. The airline is categorizing its early 777-9s, with some being outright rejected while others may be accepted after costly upgrades funded by Boeing. These jets could be eight years old before delivery.
The carrier maintains 20 firm orders and 24 options for the aircraft, with first deliveries now expected in 2027. Boeing suspended 777X production in 2022, leaving 39 early airframes in storage. The company is setting up a dedicated line to retrofit them to current standards.
Emirates already refused its first 10 units, citing age and engine durability concerns, which has pressured Boeing to absorb costs or find alternative buyers. Travelers may see delayed long-haul fleet upgrades if airlines reject older jets, leading to higher operating costs and affecting route planning and ticket pricing over the next decade.
