Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder
Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. On December 4, 2024, Mangione shot and killed Thompson on a New York City street. The motive was allegedly rooted in Mangione's personal struggles with health insurance, as he had experienced severe back pain and witnessed similar issues in others.
Mangione used a 3D printer to create the gun that killed Thompson and posed as an investor at a multibillion-dollar firm to contact UnitedHealthcare for details on the investor conference. In court, Mangione calmly admitted to shooting Thompson and confirmed that he understood he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Prosecutors plan to seek a life sentence at Mangione's sentencing on December 18. The case is still pending, with Mangione facing additional charges in New York state court. His defense team has argued that Mangione should not face both federal and state prosecution for the same crime, citing double jeopardy protections.
