Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The motive behind the crime was Mangione's severe back pain after breaking his back, which he said prompted him to research UnitedHealth Group's investor conference and pose as an investor to attend.

Mangione admitted to stalking Thompson before fatally shooting him on December 4, 2024, as Thompson walked to a Midtown Manhattan hotel where UnitedHealth Group was holding the annual investor conference. In court, Mangione read a statement saying he received an invitation to the conference within an hour of reaching out about attending as an investor.

The plea agreement means Mangione will not go to trial in the federal case in 2027, but still faces life in prison. The Thompson family acknowledged that Friday's proceedings were one step toward justice and expressed gratitude for the guilty plea.
