Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Stalking Charges in UnitedHealth Executive's Shooting
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to stalking charges that resulted in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson nearly two years ago. The incident occurred on a Midtown sidewalk, roughly a month before Mangione was scheduled to go to trial for the same crime in New York State Court.
Mangione admitted during the hearing to using interstate buses on November 24 and December 4, 2024, for the purpose of stalking and killing Thompson. He stated that he had traveled to New York City with the intention of making the healthcare system better for everyone, but ultimately used a gun to shoot Thompson in the side.
The government was prepared to show at trial surveillance video that showed Mangione arriving in New York by bus, following Thompson in midtown Manhattan, and then shooting him. Authorities also recovered a 9 mm gun when Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and a notebook that included plans for the shooting.
