Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited an offshore drilling vessel operated by Petrobras, touting new oil discoveries in the Amazon region. The find was announced last week near the mouth of the Amazon River and is seen as a potential game-changer for Brazil's energy future.

Petrobras said exploratory drilling began in October and has already detected hydrocarbons about 180 kilometers off the coast of Amapa state. However, environmental groups have sued the government and Petrobras over concerns about the licensing process and potential climate impacts.

Lula, who is running for a fourth term as president in October, emphasized that Brazil will continue to transition away from fossil fuels but sees oil drilling as a necessary step for the country's economic development. He noted that the Equatorial Margin is believed to hold significant oil reserves, with preliminary estimates suggesting up to 10 billion barrels of oil and a potential value of about $720 billion.
