MacKenzie Scott's $40 Billion Medical Debt Relief Effort Sparks Debate on Systemic Reforms
MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has made a significant impact on medical debt relief in America. Through her donations to Undue Medical Debt, formerly known as RIP Medical Debt, Scott has helped abolish over $40 billion in medical debt across all 50 states since 2020.
The model introduced by Scott is simple yet powerful. Hospitals and physician groups routinely sell uncollectible patient debt at steep discounts, which Undue Medical Debt then acquires with donations and abolishes entirely. The math is striking: every $10 donated erases roughly $1,000 in patient debt.
Scott's approach has inspired other billionaires to follow suit. Snap co-founder Evan Spiegel and his wife Miranda Kerr recently donated millions to the nonprofit, erasing $550 million in medical bills for 261,000 Californians. Despite this progress, critics argue that the model has its limits, with many calling for systemic reforms to address the root causes of medical debt.
