MacKenzie Scott's Medical Debt Relief Efforts Abolish $40 Billion
MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has made significant strides in medical debt relief through her donations to Undue Medical Debt (formerly known as RIP Medical Debt). Since 2020, her gifts totalling more than $100 million have enabled the organisation to abolish over $40 billion in medical debt across all 50 states. This initiative is part of Scott's larger philanthropic footprint, which includes giving away more than $26 billion to over 2,500 organisations.
The model introduced by Scott involves acquiring uncollectible patient debt at steep discounts using donations, and then abolishing it entirely. The math behind this approach is striking: every $10 donated erases roughly $1,000 in patient debt. This arbitrage between distressed debt markets and healthcare dysfunction has created one of the most effective philanthropic models in recent years.
Scott's approach has inspired other billionaires to follow suit. Snap co-founder Evan Spiegel and his wife Miranda Kerr recently donated millions to the nonprofit, erasing $550 million in medical bills for 261,000 Californians. However, despite this progress, critics argue that voluntary giving alone may not be enough to close the broader gap between philanthropic scale and policy inaction.
