Madison Schools Block AI Tools on Student Computers Amid Growing Concerns

The Madison Metropolitan School District in Wisconsin has blocked access to AI tools like Google's Gemini chatbot on student computers, citing concerns about their impact on students and staff. The district had previously announced that it would be limiting the use of artificial intelligence features on school-issued devices, including Chromebooks.

Superintendent Joe Gothard said at an event in August that the district is actively working to understand the implications of AI in classrooms, but acknowledged that they are still in the 'beginning stages' of understanding its impact. The district has also been reviewing its technology policy and plans to hold public hearings and meetings to discuss the issue.

Madison schools have also restricted access to social media and disabled direct YouTube access on district-issued devices for students in 4-K through eighth grade, after parents and students reported that they were able to evade website blockers to access entertainment platforms like YouTube. The district spent nearly $2 million on new Chromebooks and Google licenses last year alone, and plans to conduct a comprehensive audit of its technology platforms before making any further purchases.
