Magic Kingdom's Frontierland Transforms as Piston Peak Expansion Takes Shape
The Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World has been undergoing significant transformations, and one of the most notable changes is taking place in Frontierland. The area has been a beloved part of the park for decades, offering guests a nostalgic journey through the American West. However, as of August 2026, this classic frontier is giving way to a massive Cars-themed expansion.
The transition is becoming increasingly apparent as construction crews work tirelessly behind the scenes. Following the permanent closure of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, the crew has been expanding its construction walls, effectively shutting down a significant portion of the iconic Frontierland boardwalk. This change will significantly impact crowd flows through the area in the foreseeable future.
The demolition of classic snack kiosks is also underway, with Westward Ho being completely demolished by Buena Vista Construction Company just days prior to the expansion of construction walls. The structure's signature shingled roof, themed facade, and serving windows have been removed from the map, leaving behind only a preserved shade tree.
The current state of Frontierland might seem daunting, but all this dust, demolition, and rerouting is paving the way for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history. The closure of the boardwalk and the leveling of Westward Ho are direct prerequisites for the construction of Piston Peak National Park, a massive, Cars-themed expansion that will replace the former Rivers of America with a rugged, Rocky Mountain-inspired wilderness.
