Magnetic Navigation Takes Flight with Groundbreaking Test
A groundbreaking test flight originating at Paine Field has advanced non-GPS navigation in aviation. The Defense Innovation Unit's MagNav program, which uses quantum sensors to read the Earth's magnetic field, successfully navigated an Embraer 170 aircraft over the Pacific Ocean for four hours and 23 minutes without relying on satellites or GPS.
The MagNav system improved position accuracy by 89% compared to traditional backup navigation methods. This technology has significant implications for national security, as it cannot be spoofed or blocked by hostile forces. The Earth's magnetic field provides a continuous map even when no visible landmarks exist.
Honeywell Aerospace was selected to move forward with prototype development after 72 companies submitted applications to the commercial solutions opening. The MagNav program is set to demonstrate its capabilities on a U.S. military C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft later this year.
