Mallorca Romance Falls Flat: 'The Last Sunrise' Disappoints
A new romance drama has hit Amazon Prime Video called The Last Sunrise, based on a novel by Anna Todd, author of the popular After franchise. The story follows Oriah 'Ry' (Maia Reficco), a professional dancer who collapses on stage and is diagnosed with epilepsy caused by tumors that can be treated with surgery or medication. Ry chooses to take medication, which makes her feel numb and listless.
The plot thickens when Ry meets Julian (Fernando Lindez), a young fisherman she meets while on vacation in Mallorca with her mother, Isolde (Eva Longoria). Isolde is trying to buy out Julian's family's property to build a resort, but Ry doesn't want to tell Julian about the true intentions of her mother. Meanwhile, Julian has his own secret: he's in debt to local hooligans who are threatening him.
The movie takes a predictable turn when Ry stops taking her medication so she can feel all the things that Julian makes her feel. The third act is filled with melodrama as the conflict between Julian and Ry comes to a head. The reviewer notes that the movie's protagonist, Ry, has no agency in her own story and is barely a character.
