Mamdani's Delivery Double Standard
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has proposed a bill to force Amazon and other companies to directly hire delivery drivers, citing exploitation. However, his administration has been using outside contractors for various services, including homeless care and trucking, under $8.46 million and $11 million contracts respectively.
The Delivery Protection Act, backed by Mamdani and Council Member Tiffany Cabán, would prohibit companies from contracting out core delivery and warehouse work, forcing them to employ workers directly.
However, critics argue that this bill would wipe out dozens of independent businesses, including Amazon's Delivery Service Partner model in New York City, which employs over 5,000 workers.
A study by the comptroller found that injury-causing crashes increased near last-mile facilities after they opened, but did not attribute these crashes to facility vehicles. In fact, Amazon reports a 35.7% decrease in serious-crash rate in New York City from 2024 to 2025 after contractors adopted camera-based alerts and driver coaching.
