A fatal dog attack occurred in Washington Park, Illinois, on Thursday night. The victim, James L. Gibson, 68, was taking a smoke break from working on a rental property when he was attacked by at least five dogs.

Gibson suffered severe bite wounds to his face, torso, arms, and legs during the mauling, which dragged him across the street and attempted to pull him into a ditch. Responding officers shot several dogs when they became aggressive, allowing them to flee to a nearby wooded area.

A Google Maps search of the scene reveals that four dogs were already visible in Street View images from April, running freely down roads amidst homes and outbuildings. Neighbors reported that the dogs frequently escaped a fenced-in yard for nearly two years prior to the attack.
