Mandalorian Box Office Flop: Disney Finds Silver Lining in Retail Growth
The Mandalorian and Grogu's box office performance was underwhelming for Disney, but the company is downplaying the disappointment. According to CEO Josh D'Amaro, the movie drove growth in retail sales for the 'Star Wars' franchise, attracted visitors to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and generated significant engagement in gaming.
Despite collecting $345 million worldwide from its theatrical run, The Mandalorian and Grogu failed to meet expectations, with a projected break-even point of $500-$600 million. This makes it the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in franchise history, surpassing 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The movie's initial performance was promising, matching its production budget of $165 million in the opening weekend. However, this momentum did not sustain throughout its theatrical run.
