Mangione Friends Stand by Killer Despite Guilty Plea to Murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO
Luigi Mangione's friends are standing by him despite his guilty plea to stalking and fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione, 28, confessed in federal court on Friday to gunning down Thompson, 50, in New York City as the healthcare executive walked to a conference on December 4, 2024. The motive, according to Mangione's prepared statement, was severe back pain and his frustration with navigating the health insurance system.
'After years of enduring severe pain from a broken back, navigating the obstacles of the health insurance system and witnessing similar experiences of countless others, I learned that UnitedHealthcare would be holding its annual investor conference in New York City on December 4, 2024,' Mangione said.
Mangione's friends, including RJ Martin, told Rolling Stone they were surprised by his guilty plea and expected the case to go to trial. They acknowledged the severity of Thompson's murder but hoped that Mangione's sentence would not stop a conversation about injustices within the American healthcare system.
