Mangione Murder Trial Postponed Amid Double Jeopardy Fight
Luigi Mangione's murder trial in New York has been postponed indefinitely due to his lawyers' efforts to have the case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds. The 28-year-old pleaded guilty last week to federal charges of stalking and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in 2024.
The state prosecution is seeking a life sentence, but Mangione's lawyers argue that he cannot be tried twice for the same conduct. They claim that the federal case and the state case are 'coterminous' and that the federal guilty plea should bar the state case.
Judge Gregory Carro has given the Manhattan District Attorney's Office until October 9 to respond to Mangione's double jeopardy claims, with a hearing scheduled for December 10. Mangione is set to be sentenced in the federal case just a week after the hearing.
