Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking Charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing
Luigi Mangione, the 28-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges. The plea deal could potentially allow Mangione to seek a dismissal of the state murder charges due to his admission of the lesser charge and request a delay of the upcoming trial.
The shooting occurred on December 4, 2024, as Thompson walked toward a Manhattan hotel where UnitedHealth Group was hosting an event. Mangione admitted to shooting Thompson in connection with the federal case before U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett in Manhattan federal court on August 14. The defendant faces up to life in prison in both the state and federal cases.
A former classmate of Mangione's, Freddie Leatherbury, believes it's possible that Mangione was radicalized by an ideology that led him to commit the crime. Dr. Michael Welner, a forensic psychiatrist, described the killing as a 'spectacle crime' intended to shock people and make a symbolic statement.
