Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking Charges in Thompson Killing
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 28-year-old admitted in court that he shot Thompson in Manhattan and acknowledged that he knew what he was doing was illegal.
Mangione's guilty plea came after the court threw out harsher murder charges that could have resulted in the death penalty. He will be sentenced by Judge Margaret Garnett in December, with a maximum sentence of life in prison possible.
The defendant faces additional state charges in New York and Pennsylvania related to his arrest and the killing of Thompson. Mangione's lawyers argued that he should not face prosecution twice for the same crime, citing New York's law prohibiting multiple prosecutions for the same offense.
