Mangione Pleads Guilty to Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO in Manhattan Court

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Richard Thompson in a Manhattan court. In a prepared statement, Mangione admitted to shooting and killing Thompson on December 4, 2024. He explained that his motive was frustration with the health insurance system after experiencing difficulties obtaining coverage for a back injury. Mangione also described how he posed as an investor to gather information about UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference, where Thompson was scheduled to appear.

Mangione used a 3D printer to make part of a gun and traveled to New York with the intention of killing Thompson. The CEO's widow and other family members attended the hearing, calling the guilty plea an 'important step toward justice' and expecting sentencing to reflect the seriousness of the crime. Prosecutors will seek a life sentence for Mangione, the maximum available under federal law.

The defense is seeking to dismiss separate New York murder and weapons charges, arguing that double jeopardy protections prevent punishment for the same conduct twice. However, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office plans to contest this motion.
