Mangione Pleads Guilty to Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Thompson
Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in federal court to two charges related to the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In a statement, Mangione admitted to killing Thompson and criticized the US health insurance system.
The crime took place on December 4, 2024, outside a hotel where an investor conference was being held. Mangione had previously emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership pretending to be an investor managing over $50 billion in assets, seeking information about the conference.
He claimed that he received a quick response and used this as motivation to travel to New York with the intention of killing Thompson. Mangione used a 3-D printer to make part of a gun before committing the crime.
Mangione's guilty plea will likely result in a life sentence, as prosecutors plan to seek the maximum allowable punishment at his sentencing on December 18. The state case against him is still pending and may be dismissed due to double jeopardy protections.
