Mangione Pleads Guilty to Murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO in Planned Attack

Luigi Mangione, a 28-year-old man, pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In court, Mangione admitted to shooting Thompson outside the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan in December 2024.

The family of the victim broke down in tears after hearing Mangione's admission and released a statement condemning the 'heinous' act as 'important step toward justice for Brian and for our family.' They also expressed gratitude that the federal justice system had held Mangione accountable, but emphasized the need for the court to ensure sentencing reflects the severity of the crime.

Mangione was arrested after a multi-day manhunt following Thompson's killing. Authorities seized a book belonging to Mangione that appeared to contain plans to kill the CEO. The Justice Department originally pursued the death penalty for Mangione, but U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett blocked this in January.
