Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty in federal court on August 14. The decision aims to avoid a possible death penalty, although he could still face a life sentence. According to sources, Judge Margaret Garnet may impose a less harsh sentence if Mangione pleads guilty.

Mangione was accused of murdering UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. He allegedly followed Thompson to a New York City hotel and shot him from behind with a handgun. Surveillance footage captured the incident, and authorities tracked Mangione to a Pennsylvania McDonald's where he was found with a handgun in his backpack.

The plea deal could impact the ongoing state case, set to go to trial on September 8. Mangione faces charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, which could lead to a possible sentence of 25 years to life.
