Mangione's Guilty Plea Postpones State Murder Trial
Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024, has received a significant reprieve after pleading guilty to federal charges.
Mangione's state murder trial had been set to begin on September 8 but was postponed following his guilty plea last Friday. His defence team is seeking to dismiss the state case on double jeopardy grounds, citing the constitutional protection that bars prosecuting a person twice for the same crime.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office has until October 9 to respond to Mangione's bid to throw out the case. Jury selection was initially set to begin on September 8, but it has been cancelled, with the next court date scheduled for December 10.
Mangione pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to two criminal stalking charges and admitted to fatally shooting Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel after following him to a UnitedHealth Group investor conference.
