Mangione's Murder Trial Postponed Amid Double Jeopardy Claims
Luigi Mangione's New York State murder trial has been postponed after he pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The murder took place on December 4, 2024, outside a Manhattan hotel where Thompson was attending a UnitedHealth Group investor conference. Mangione admitted to tracking and fatally shooting Thompson during the hearing.
Mangione's attorneys argued that prosecuting him in New York State would violate the principle of double jeopardy, which prevents a person from being prosecuted twice for the same crime. The state trial had been scheduled to begin on September 8.
Following the guilty plea, federal prosecutors stated they will seek a life sentence when Mangione is sentenced on December 18.
