Mangione's State Trial Postponed Amid Double Jeopardy Concerns
A New York State murder trial against Luigi Mangione has been postponed until at least December 10, after he pleaded guilty in federal court to stalking charges that led to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione, a 28-year-old Ivy League graduate, pleaded guilty on September 6 to shooting and killing Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. He admitted that he understood his actions would place Thompson in fear of death or serious bodily injury.
The defense has filed a motion to dismiss the state case on double jeopardy grounds, citing the Fifth Amendment's prohibition against being tried twice for the same crime. State Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro has set a new timeline for hearing arguments from both sides, with prosecutors due to respond by October 9 and the defense by October 30.
