MapQuest Overtakes Google Maps as Top Travel App Amid Trump-Induced Surge

MapQuest has surged to the top of Apple's U.S. and Canadian App Store charts, dethroning Google Maps as the most popular travel app. The navigation app, launched in 2009, had been steadily gaining ground since a recent surge in downloads.

The sudden increase in popularity is attributed to MapQuest's response to President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America'. While Google Maps and Apple Maps relabeled the lake for U.S. users, MapQuest retained its original name, sparking a lighthearted jab at the decision with a webpage allowing users to enter their own name for the lake.

MapQuest was one of the pioneers of online mapping, launching its software in 1996 and a mobile app in 2009. It offers turn-by-turn navigation, live traffic updates, alternate routes, and multi-stop planning, making it a strong choice for drivers.
