Maritime Decarbonisation Breakthrough: NORDEN and Microsoft Launch Book & Claim Pilot
NORDEN and Microsoft have partnered to launch a pioneering Book & Claim pilot in the maritime industry, marking the first time verified emissions reductions have been delivered through this registry.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Book & Claim registry has allowed NORDEN to issue verified emissions reductions associated with sustainable marine fuels consumed elsewhere within the maritime sector. This innovative approach separates the environmental benefit from the physical fuel transaction, enabling companies to purchase verified emissions reductions without requiring those fuels on their specific shipping routes.
Microsoft became the first company globally to use the RSB registry's Book & Claim framework for shipping emissions as part of its broader work on value chain emissions. Anne Jensen, COO at NORDEN, commented that this transaction demonstrates how Book & Claim can help bridge the gap in addressing emissions embedded deep within global supply chains.
