Market Pauses Ahead of Pivotal Retail Earnings Reports
The stock market experienced a relatively flat day on August 17 as investors awaited key retail earnings reports. The S&P 500 fell by 0.50% to 7,747, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.31% to 26,647 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.51% to 53,460.
Gold prices rose 0.80% to $4,472.90, but treasury yields increased as the 10-Year Treasury yield climbed 0.05% to 4.68%. The industrial sector led gainers, while communication services and utilities lagged behind.
Notable stock price movements included a 4.5% rebound in Space Exploration Technologies' shares on analyst notes, and a 7.3% drop in Carvana's stock as the company's S&P 500 component.
The market's cautious stance is attributed to the upcoming retail earnings reports from companies such as Walmart, Home Depot, and Target. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield hit its highest mark since 2007 at 5.3%, highlighting concerns about rising interest rates.
