Market Sees Quiet Day as Oil Prices Continue Volatility
The stock market experienced a relatively quiet day on Monday, with the S&P 500 holding just above its record high set on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite slipped slightly.
Brent crude oil prices continued to be volatile, swinging from $113 in the spring to near $80 last week and back up to $86 today. This volatility is largely due to ongoing negotiations in the Strait of Hormuz, which have stalled over Iran's new demands.
The Magnificent 7 - a group of top-performing cloud and software giants - saw mixed results, with Microsoft rising 2.1%, Amazon adding 2%, and Meta Platforms tacking on 1.3%. However, Nvidia fell 2% after reports suggested it may cut back on high-bandwidth memory chips in its AI accelerator design to protect margins.
The oil market's impact on the stock market is a key factor in this week's trading, with every time crude falls, inflation fears ease and stocks rally. This cycle has repeated itself three times in three weeks, leading up to Wednesday's Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.
