Market Stalls as Oil Prices Surge Ahead of CPI Report
The stock market showed little movement on Monday, with investors seemingly waiting for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Wednesday. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) held onto Friday's record high, rising 0.05%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) slipped 0.13% and the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell 0.19%. The indexes had risen earlier in the day but dropped back to breakeven by mid-morning.
The United States Oil Fund (USO) jumped 5.97%, driven by a rise in Brent crude oil prices, which surpassed $86 per barrel for the first time this week. This increase comes as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz continue to impact global oil markets. The geopolitical risk premium is once again affecting investor sentiment.
Microsoft (MSFT) led gains among tech stocks, rising 2.1%, while Amazon (AMZN) and Meta Platforms (META) also posted solid gains. However, Nvidia (NVDA) fell 2% due to concerns about high-bandwidth memory chips in its AI accelerators, with Apple (AAPL) following suit.
The overall market movement was minor, with most indexes fluctuating within a narrow range. The S&P 500 has been sitting on a record set just last week, and the second-quarter earnings season is nearing completion with profit growth expected to approach 50%.
