Marvel's Cancelled Shows Spark Backlash Over 'Obvious' Optics
Marvel Studios has faced growing criticism from fans and actors alike over its recent cancellations of two high-profile projects, Wonder Man and Blade. The shows' leads, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mahershala Ali, respectively, have spoken out about the optics surrounding their roles in the MCU.
Abdul-Mateen II, who played Simon Williams in Wonder Man, told Vanity Fair that he believes 'the optics are obvious.' He claimed that his show was canceled due to low viewership numbers, not quality of the product. The actor stated that his show had all the necessary ingredients for success and deserves further study on why it didn't continue.
This criticism follows a similar response from Ali, who said Marvel had him under contract and had billions of dollars to make Blade. Wonder Man's showrunner Andrew Guest also expressed frustration over the cancellation, stating that contracts were signed and schedules cleared before the decision was made internally between Disney and Marvel.
