MC-21 Takes Flight: Russia's Boeing Rival Clears Key Test
Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has achieved a major milestone in its development of the Yakovlev MC-21, a narrowbody twinjet designed to compete with Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo aircraft. The first serial production standard example of the MC-21 took to the skies for its inaugural test flight on August 3, 2026, from Irkutsk Northwest Airport (UIIR).
The MC-21-310 model, powered by Russian-built Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines, flew for one hour and 23 minutes, reaching a maximum height of 19,700 feet at a speed of 600 km/h (372 miles per hour). This milestone marks a significant step forward for the UAC as it works towards full-scale serial production.
The MC-21 program has faced numerous delays and setbacks since its launch in 2009. Initially designed with Western engines, including the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G, the project was forced to pivot after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led to sanctions and a shift towards using Russian-made components.
With 384 firm orders, including 198 from Aeroflot, the MC-21 is poised for entry into service. Test pilot Roman Taskayev noted that 'The first assembly line produced aircraft performed well, and the flight plan was completed in full.'
