McDonald's Dominance Persists Amid Burger King's Revamp Efforts
The fast food industry is dominated by two giants: McDonald's and Burger King. While both chains have their loyal customers, McDonald's has consistently held a larger market share. In 2024, McDonald's held an impressive 48% of the market share, with over 44,000 locations in more than 100 countries.
Burger King, on the other hand, has struggled to close the gap. With around 19,000 locations globally, it captures a mere 10% of the market share. The company has attempted to challenge McDonald's dominance through various marketing campaigns and menu item releases.
One notable example is Burger King's 'New Whopper' release in 2026, which was part of a multi-year revamp aimed at revitalizing the chain. While this move helped push Burger King back into second place after being surpassed by Wendy's for six years, it remains unclear if it will be enough to challenge McDonald's.
McDonald's, meanwhile, has faced its own challenges in recent times. The company has struggled with high prices, social media mishaps, and burger flops like the Big Arch Burger. Despite these setbacks, McDonald's market share remains strong, making it an uphill battle for Burger King to gain ground.
