McDonald's Revives Spicy McNuggets Amidst Struggling US Traffic
McDonald's is reviving its Spicy Chicken McNuggets nationwide on September 1, marking their return for the first time since 2024. The limited-time product adds cayenne and chili peppers to McDonald's signature tempura batter. This move comes as the company's shares have touched a 52-week low of $259.85, while U.S. customer traffic remains under pressure.
The return of Spicy Chicken McNuggets is seen as a test for McDonald's traffic strategy, particularly in light of increasing competition from rivals like Burger King and Wendy's. Burger King recently upgraded its chicken nuggets with new breading and more sauces, while Wendy's is offering 10-piece Classic or Spicy Nuggets for $1.99 with any purchase through September 27.
McDonald's U.S. business still needs stronger traffic, as second-quarter U.S. comparable sales rose just 0.8%, primarily due to customers spending more per visit. The company's global comparable sales increased 1.3%, revenue rose 4%, and diluted earnings climbed 6% to $3.32.
