A recent discovery has shed light on the extent of data collection and profiling by fast-food giant McDonald's. Journalist Reece Rogers, who works for Condé Nast-owned Wired magazine, requested the personal data that McDonald's had stored about him through their loyalty program.

The response was a 515-page dossier detailing his past purchases, predicted future behavior, and even specific product preferences. According to the report, McDonald's calculated that Rogers would visit the restaurant 2.16 times over the next six weeks, spending an average of $13.49 per order.

The file also revealed Rogers' most relevant products based on his past behavior: a Large Diet Coke, followed by a Spicy Snack Wrap and The Grinch McShaker Fry Large. McDonald's even assigned Rogers a 'Customer Attrition Likelihood' of zero, indicating little chance that he would stop patronizing the Golden Arches.

Rogers' experience has raised concerns about data privacy and security. Experts like Stephanie T. Nguyen, a senior fellow at Columbia Law School's Center for Law and the Economy, have weighed in on the issue. 'If you study the McDonald's nearly 10,000-word privacy policy,' she noted, 'it notes how the company can monitor a customer's precise geolocation, their browsing history, their app interactions, and their social media activity.'

A spokesperson for McDonald's stated that they take data privacy and security seriously and use information to provide customers with more relevant deals and messages. However, Rogers has vowed to quit McDonald's to test whether the company's algorithm is accurate in its predictions.
