McDonald's Value Deal Disaster Costs Chain $310 Million
McDonald's has faced significant losses in sales due to its failed value deal strategy. The chain saw a 2.4% decline in spending from low-income consumers, resulting in a $310 million loss in sales alone. This is the first quarterly decline in sales among low-income consumers for McDonald's in over a year.
The data firm Numerator revealed that McDonald's gets only 30% of its sales from consumers making less than $35,000 per year, down from 34% in 2018 and 2019. Burger King, on the other hand, saw a 0.3% increase in sales among low-income consumers.
The failed discount offer at McDonald's was primarily responsible for its underperformance in sales. CEO Chris Kempczinski called it a 'bad trade' as customers perceived higher prices despite lower individual menu item costs.
