Medicare Advantage Insurers Slash Offerings Amid Rising Costs
The three largest Medicare Advantage insurers are significantly reducing their offerings for 2027. UnitedHealth, Aetna, and Humana will be discontinuing plans that were previously available to around 2.6 million enrollees in 2026. This marks a significant contraction in the Medicare Advantage market, with nearly double the number of people being dropped from a plan compared to the previous year.
The main drivers behind this decision are rising medical costs among older patients and stricter federal audits that have squeezed revenue sources for insurers. As a result, carriers are cutting back on plans, counties, and product lines where the math no longer works. This means that even if a plan survives the cuts, it may still arrive with higher out-of-pocket maximums or reduced benefits.
For older Americans, this contraction in Medicare Advantage options can be particularly concerning. The enrollment window for 2027 is from October 15 to December 7, and anyone whose plan is terminated should review their options during this time to ensure they are choosing a plan that meets their needs.
