Menopause Goes Mainstream, But With a Commercial Twist
Google Trends data from 2005 to 2025 reveals an increasing commercialization of menopause content online, particularly in the US.
A study published in JAMA Network Open tracked menopause-related Google Trends and found that by 2025, one in three searches were commercial, up from one in five to one in seven in 2010.
The highest-volume commercial searches were related to supplements, with black cohosh being the most common, despite a lack of convincing data showing its effectiveness for menopause symptoms. Digital services, particularly apps, were also popular.
Researchers used a metric called the commercialization index to measure the proportion of commercial searches among combined informational and commercial search activity.
