Menopause Searches Shift from Informational to Commercial
For too long, menopause has been a taboo topic, suffering from sexism, ageism, and lack of education. However, thanks to the internet, women are now accessing more information about menopause, leading to a shift in public discourse.
A recent survey found that 90% of women who experienced perimenopause had not learned about it in school, and only 2.1% reported being well-informed. This lack of education has led to frustration among women when they seek medical attention for their symptoms.
Google Trends data shows that menopause-related searches have increased significantly over the past two decades, with a notable spike in commercial searches related to supplements and digital services. The study found that by 2025, one in three menopause searches were commercial, up from one in seven in 2010.
The most popular commercial search terms related to menopause were for supplements, particularly black cohosh, which has been linked to liver toxicity despite a lack of evidence supporting its effectiveness. Digital services, such as apps, were also highly sought after.
