Merck and Moderna Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Offers New Hope for Melanoma Patients
Pharmaceutical companies Merck and Moderna have made significant breakthroughs in developing personalized cancer vaccines, offering new hope for patients with melanoma. Their treatment, known as intismeran autogene, uses mRNA technology to instruct the immune system to target specific mutations found only on a person's tumour.
In a large trial involving over 1,000 melanoma patients who had localized tumours removed surgically but were at high risk of recurrence, the vaccine helped prevent the return and spread of disease. The treatment combines Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda with a customized mRNA vaccine, which is given alongside Keytruda in multiple doses.
Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of the Center for Melanoma at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, hailed the study as 'a big deal' for the field and expressed hope that these approaches may change the way cancer is treated more broadly. Dr. Julie Gralow, chief medical officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, called it a 'monumental leap forward', validating mRNA technology as a cancer treatment.
Merck and Moderna have several large trials underway in non-small cell lung cancers that have been surgically removed, as well as mid-stage studies in bladder and kidney cancers. Early-stage trials are also being conducted in pancreatic and stomach cancers, with numerous trial results expected in the next year or two.
