Merck and Moderna's Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise in Melanoma Trial
A personalized mRNA vaccine against cancer has shown promising results in a Phase 3 trial conducted by drugmakers Merck and Moderna. The study focused on preventing the recurrence of melanoma, which affects around 8,500 Americans each year.
The trial involved over 1,100 people who had previously undergone surgery for melanoma. Researchers paired the mRNA vaccine with Keytruda, an immunotherapy medication that blocks a tumor's defense against T cells. The combination performed significantly better than Keytruda alone in preventing cancer recurrence.
Melissa Cooke, director of the Center for RNA Therapeutics at Houston Methodist, called the study 'an exciting breakthrough' in fighting cancer. She noted that mRNA vaccines are effective not only against viruses but also against cancer. This technology could potentially be used to design vaccines against other types of tumors.
