Merck and Moderna's mRNA Vaccine Delivers Promising Results in Melanoma Trial
A breakthrough in cancer treatment has been announced by Merck and Moderna, as their personalized mRNA-based vaccine, intismeran, showed promise in a late-stage trial for high-risk melanoma patients.
The combination of the vaccine with Merck's existing immunotherapy Keytruda demonstrated potential for extending the lifespans of melanoma patients, making it the first regimen to achieve this goal in a late-stage study. The Phase 3 trial enrolled over 1,100 patients whose advanced or high-risk melanoma had been completely removed through surgery.
The treatment works by mapping the unique mutation pattern of each patient's tumor and using that data to train the immune system to target it, described as individualized neoantigen therapy. Dr. Ahmad Tarhini of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute expects regulatory approval based on the trial's positive results, with patient access likely available by early 2027.
The combination reduced the risk of cancer spreading to distant parts of the body as well as cutting recurrence rates. The treatment is relatively safe, with the most commonly reported side effects being fatigue, soreness at the injection site, and chills.
