Merck Cancer Vaccine Soars After Groundbreaking Trial Success
A groundbreaking Phase 3 clinical trial has yielded impressive results for Merck's (MRK) cancer vaccine treatment in combination with Moderna's mRNA technology. The INTerpath-001 study, which involved 1,137 high-risk melanoma patients, successfully met its primary objective of recurrence-free survival and secondary objective of distant metastasis-free survival.
The trial, a collaboration between Merck and Moderna, marks the first successful large-scale Phase 3 trial for mRNA cancer immunotherapy. The vaccine treatment showed superior efficacy compared to Keytruda monotherapy in this specific patient population. This breakthrough builds upon earlier Phase 2b results that demonstrated a 49% decrease in disease recurrence or mortality when combining the therapies.
MERK shares surged approximately 10% during premarket hours, reaching $143.52 and establishing a new yearly peak. Moderna's stock price skyrocketed over 90% to $118.61 per share in early trading. Financial analysts from Barclays project the treatment could achieve around $3 billion in melanoma-related revenue by 2035.
