Merck Foundation Congratulates Burundian First Lady and Fondation on UN Population Award
Merck Foundation congratulated H.E. Madam ANGELINE NDAYISHIMIYE, First Lady of Burundi, and Fondation Bonne Action Umugiraneza on receiving the prestigious 2026 United Nations Population Award in the institutional category.
The award recognizes their outstanding contribution towards improving health, education, and well-being in Burundi. Merck Foundation has been working with Fondation Bonne Action Umugiraneza since 2020 to achieve significant milestones in healthcare capacity building, girls' education, and community awareness.
Through the partnership, Merck Foundation provided scholarships for 55 Burundian doctors across critical medical specialties, contributing to building sustainable local healthcare capacity. They also established the country's first public IVF centre, trained fertility specialists, embryologists, and technicians, and supported cancer care and diabetes care development.
