Merck Foundation Congratulates Burundi's First Lady on UN Population Award

The Merck Foundation has congratulated H.E. Madam Angeline Ndayishimiye, First Lady of the Republic of Burundi, and Fondation Bonne Action Umugiraneza on receiving the prestigious 2026 United Nations Population Award in the institutional category.

This recognition is a testament to their outstanding contribution towards improving health, education, and well-being of communities in Burundi. The award was presented at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative (MFFLI), praised the partnership between Merck Foundation and Fondation Bonne Action Umugiraneza, saying 'I strongly believe that educating girls is one of the most powerful ways to empower women and transform communities.'

The partnership has achieved significant milestones in healthcare capacity building, including providing 55 scholarships for Burundian doctors across critical medical specialties. Merck Foundation also launched the 'Educating Linda' program, which supports annually the education of 40 high-performing but underprivileged schoolgirls in Burundi.
