Merck India Pioneers Fertility Benefits to Support Employees' Reproductive Choices

Merck India is pioneering a fertility benefits program for its employees, aiming to break down the stigma surrounding infertility in the workplace. The company's managing director, Pratima Reddy, notes that women are increasingly choosing to have children later in their careers, often at a time when professional stakes are high.

With over 4,500 employees in India, Merck wants to ensure its workforce doesn't feel forced to choose between career advancement and starting a family. The company has invested around $4 million (roughly ₹40 crore) globally since the program's launch late last year.

The fertility benefits are designed to be confidential, allowing employees to undergo IVF treatment without disclosing their medical status to managers. This approach acknowledges that discussing infertility can still feel taboo in a professional setting.
